ABILITY-FORWARD

Hull & East Yorkshire Ability is a charitable partnership organisation who is dedicated to fulfilling it's aims to improve access and experiences for Children, Young People and Adults with disabilities. Ability has a very successful record of project delivery culminating in being nominated for the Heritage Lottery Awards 2006 for our Forgotten City project. This success is reflected by the support we have received from many other funders who recognise the value and success of our project delivery.

Plans are now well in hand to move Ability into 2007 and beyond.
We now have an action plan to add to our range of successful projects and open a new group, RISC-2 (Rights & Independence Social Club) in Hull which will take 18-25 year olds with disabilities.
This new provision will be a more mature activity and aimed at fulfilling everyone's potential towards the employment arena and gaining extra independence.
We will build on self confidence through guided and supported activities and work experience.
The result will be to enhance and grow the life and social skills of the young people and adults with disabilities which will promote far greater independence and self-confidence.

We're also branching out into East Yorkshire with the RISC groups (13-18 years)

What is “Ability”

Hull and East Yorkshire “Ability” is an initiative that was inspired by staff at The Childrens Centre, Walker Street, Hull, following Disability Awareness Week 1997. It is a charitable partnership organisation that works with people of all ages with disabilities and/or special needs in and around Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. By working with other organisations, “Ability” maximises the use of resources and expertise.

Our Aims

To create opportunities for children, young people and adults to take a lead in planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of local events;

To involve children, young people and adults in a range of arts, sports and other activities in order to achieve quality learning outcomes, like building confidence and raising self-esteem;

To work in partnership with organisations and groups with similar principles;

To provide opportunities to share information with voluntary and statutory organisations and professionals.

“Ability” will pursue these aims in order for people with disabilities to realise their full potential, by fulfilling the following strategic objectives:-

By managing projects that promote inclusion, led by working groups;

By raising public awareness about issues that affect all people with disabilities by promoting a wide range of inclusive activities;

By maintaining existing partnerships and the development of new ones;

By further developing the work of “Ability”;

By identifying and securing further funding;

By developing a publicity strategy;

By continuous improvement.
